A new housing scheme in Birmingham has been given the green light by planners, providing a new use for a site that has been derelict for 20 years. Galliard Homes and Apsley House Capital have gained planning permission to build 438 new homes on the site in Balsall Heath once occupied by Joseph Chamberlain Sixth Form College and Birmingham Sports Centre, the Express and Star reports.
What about home snagging Birmingham?
On the face of it, this is all good news. A brownfield site is brought back into use, the mix of two, three and four-bedroom townhouses, spread over three areas with a mix of terraces and apartments, will provide much-needed housing, as well as 263 parking spaces and room for 670 bicycles, plus a landscaped public area and linear park.
However, for anyone buying one of these new properties, it will be wise to have an expert on home snagging in Birmingham carry out an inspection, to check for any issues and ensure these are tackled.
Hopefully, there will not be too many, as the partnership between the firms is busy constructing more homes in the city, alongside commercial developments.
Director at Apsley House Capital Robin Norstrom said: “We currently have around 1,400 homes and more than 100,000 sq ft of commercial space under construction at three sites across Birmingham, demonstrating our long-term commitment and investment.”
The Galliard and Apsley House partnership is not the only source of new homes in the city at present.
Business Live reported this week that Kings Crescent Homes has secured new funds for another residential regeneration project, a 100-unit development in the Jewellery Quarter, while Propertywire reported last week that developer Elevate plans 85 homes on Price Street in the City Centre, close to Aston University.
The new homes are being built despite the ONS reporting that, after many years of increase, Birmingham’s resident population actually dropped very slightly between 2019 and 2020, to 1.14 million.
